I was in 8th grade and it was Halloween. I was one of those people who wasn't really shy and I decided to wear a costume to school. No one had said anything about costumes not being allowed that I had heard. So I got a pirate costume out of our Halloween box and put on the pair of black pants that looked shredded at the end, and a red and white striped shirt and an eye patch. Nothing too elaborate. It was school after all. So after the pep rally that morning, I was walking down the hall and the cranky art teacher whom I had never had, yelled down the hall "what do you think you are doing?" I didn't answer because I was just calmly walking to my class and he couldn't possibly be talking to me. Well, he came and grabbed my arm and said "Come on, we're going to the Principal's office." Okay. That's when I found out costumes weren't allowed. So I took the eye patch off and told the Principal that everything else was in accordance with the dress code. She didn't feel like being reasonable and called my mom. Okay- I had never ever gotten in trouble before so this just seemed really weird to me that a pair of black pants and a striped shirt was what landed me in the office.
My mom showed up and was about as understandable as I was. She knew what I was wearing that morning and was okay with it. I wasn't showing any cleavage or booty and if it hadn't been Halloween, I probably could have worn the outfit safely (not something I would recommend for everyday wear, but one could do it.) So after the Principal suggested my mom bring me some appropriate clothing or I could pick from the box of sweats she had, my mom told said this (I remember it exactly and was so proud), "my daughter isn't feeling well today and I think she needs to go home." So she signed me out and we went shopping, lol.
Did I mention that on the way out we passed the school counselors who were wearing a funny little pig snout masks over their noses for Halloween? Nice.

Go Your Mom! What a cool story--I love that she took you out afterward. Way to go!
Your mom did the right thing! I mean come on, what was wrong with your costume? absolutely nothing!
ha ha ha that's funny! I agree... Go your mom! I hope to do that one day too for my kids. What a great example on what really matters. I love the new background!

great day sweetie, beany
Believe it or not I actually remember this happening! I think I saw crazy art teacher overreacting. Yes, pirate costumes are definitely the number one concern in our schools . . . hee hee. But I didn't know what your mom did - that is so awesome!
wow. I love this story! I could totally see your mom doing this!
