Summer Fun!

We are having a wonderful summer! The plan was to continue with school in between fun activities but the fun hasn't left enough time. We've still been learning- who needs school for that? We had a great Independence Day. I'm not big on parades but the kids wanted to go and every child should be able to see a few parades while they still enjoy it. We brought donuts and water and scooters with us so the kids would have something to do before it started since we had to be there somewhat early. We didn't get a shady spot so it was HOT! Thankfully I was armed with sunscreen. We stuck around for most of the parade but the sun was just too much for Joseph who was stuck in his stroller for way too long and the older kids had had enough as well. So we left before the end but I think we saw most of the good entries anyway. The kids just loved all the bands! We will probably go again next year but find a spot in the shade.

We spent the rest of the day swimming at my mom's house and enjoying the beautiful day. My children have also not had the joy of seeing a real fireworks show. So that was on our list of things to do. We took of at dusk to go find a nice viewing spot and found a dead end road with a few other people sitting in their lawn chairs. We had to wait a while but it was worth it! I loved hearing the oohs and ahhs of my children. It was so much fun and we will certainly be doing that again next year!

I am having a Summer Science Fun Day for some kids in my church next week so we've been practicing with Solar S'mores. We found a method that works wonderfully and you don't need a pizza box- we never have one. First assemble your s'more and wrap it in tin foil. Next put them in a black trash bag and put it in the sun! I put it on a cookie sheet so they would all stay upright and easy to move. After about an hour (I forget to time it) in the heat we've been having, everything is nice and gooey and smooshable. I hope it works in the morning sun too when we'll be having our activity. If not, there's nothing bad about eating chocolate, marshmallows, and graham crackers when they AREN'T mushy right?

It's been such a relaxing summer so far and I can't wait to see what else we do!

Glad you're having a fun, relaxing summer!! :) Just be careful of using garbage bags for the s'mores---it sounds sooo good, but I think just about all garbage bags are laden with pesticides. NOT what you want in those tummies!! I wonder if it would work as well in a paper bag. Reading that made me laugh how people would always ask (when finding out we're from TX) if we fried eggs on the sidewalk. LOL!

Great post, Lena!

"We've still been learning- who needs school for that?"

I hear you on that! I'm telling you, we are more and more into "unschooling" (if that's what call it) all the time and it's so enjoyable! I mean, we loosely use a curriculum, but we love natural learning!

SUCH fun ideas! Your Science Day sounds great! How cool are you?! Oooh, and fireworks shows are SO fun! Oooooh! Aaaahhhh!
